Paediatric Physiotherapy

What conditions can be treated by a Paediatric Physiotherapist?

A Paediatric Physiotherapist treats any conditions similar to those in general physiotherapy practice.  However, there are some difficulties and conditions which are related almost entirely to paediatrics. Some of these may be recognised at birth. Others may become more apparent later in the child's development.

Some Paediatric Conditions I work with are:

Developmental/Gross Motor delay
-
Cerebral Palsy
-
Spina Bifida
-
Down Syndrome
-
Progressive neuromuscular disorders (Muscular Dystrophy, SMA, Fredreich’s Ataxia)
-
Congenital syndromes
-
Hypotonia/ hypertonia
-
Postural problems
-
Weight Management
-
Motor Dysfunction
-
Orthopaedics
-
Orthopaedic/Musculoskeletal conditions
-
DCD

What might we work on?

Following an assessment of your child’s condition, a personalised treatment plan will be created specifically for them. This treatment plan will involve hands-on treatment as well as exercises and activities to perform at home. Depending on the relevance to your child’s condition and needs, treatment may include work targeted towards:

Posture/Postural Management
-
Movement and range of motion
-
Strength and endurance
-
Gross motor skills
-
Balance and co-ordination
-
Functional activities
-
Activity modification
-
Equipment
-
Orthotics
-
And much more…

What does a visit look like?

All treatment begins with an hour-long assessment in your home. During this time, we will discuss your child’s medical history and their needs; create goals and perform a full assessment of range, strength, balance and whatever else may be relevant to your child’s condition. From these findings, a personalised treatment plan and programme are created.

All subsequent treatments will last 30 to 60 minutes depending on your child’s needs.
